Readers' Poll Results

The polls have closed, the votes have been counted, and the winners according to the Aye Tunes readers have been worked out.
Not much chatter from me on the results, my head is still bursting from counting everything.
An elaborate points system was used to judge things, with 5 points for #1, 3 for #2 and 1 for #3, no ballot stuffing took place, hardly anyone voted for themselves and I didn't give myself a vote.
A surprising number of people took part, so I'd just like to quickly thank all of you that took a bit of time to join in.

Drum roll please, your winners are...

=2. King Tut's Wah Wah Hut
4. The Captain's Rest, Glasgow
=4. Sneaky Pete's, Edinburgh
=4. Stereo, Glasgow

Despite fewer and fewer bands choosing to play there, we still love The Barras apparently. Even the Weegies loved The Roxy too.

Best Gig:
1. The National. O2 Academy, Glasgow, November.
2. Frightened Rabbit, Glasgow Barrowlands, 3rd December.
3. French Wives, The Seventeenth Century, Washington Irving, Rachel Sermanni. King Tut's, July.
=3. Aye Tunes Vs Peenko: Kid Canaveral, Mitchell Museum, Campfires in Winter. The Captain's Rest, April.

The hardest one to count, since practically every vote was for something different. Beyond the three above Homegame and Awaygame were the most popular, if they'd been counted together they would have made the top three.

I'm wishing I'd included the Smash Hits style Sexiest Male and Female questions, but I worried that if I had the blogging community would disown me. They still might.

Thanks again to everyone who voted, it was popular enough that we'll be doing it again next year.

  1. What depressing reading this makes. Sums up the cudly lovely lovely scene, has everyone forgot how to use their amps and make propper noise!?

  2. Sneaky Pete's best venue, FTW?

Huge pillar in the middle so you can often see only half or none of the band unless you are in the front half of the room, poor beer selection and expensive, venue is hotter than the surface of the sun, when anyone good is on it's way too packed and crowded. Good bands and great staff but shite venue.

Glasgow has all the best venues, but if anywhere should get voted best venue in Edinburgh it should be Queens Hall - great beer selection, gorgeous venue, good sound, good staff. Caves and The Lot are good too. Roxy RIP :(

Good to see Admiral Fallow; The Last Battle and Kid Canaveral getting votes. But where are Endor; Maple Leaves; Beerjacket etc?

  3. Anonymous, are you genuinely acting surprised that a blog which writes about a particular kind of music attracts readers who generally speaking like that kind of music as well?

That's like acting all shocked when a pimped out Vauxhall Corsa drives past and, shock horror, isn't playing Elton John at ear-splitting volume.

Mind you, given the evidence you've supplied on your levels of literacy, I suppose you are to be congratulated on being able to make out the results at all.

If you want to read a readers' poll which rewards bands who make 'propper noise' then why not read a blog which primarily writes about bands who make 'propper noise'. Expecting to read that kind of stuff here is just dumb.

  4. Off the top of my head I'm struggling to think of a venue that doesn't have a pillar - most of them are down in the basement after all - has a good choice of beer and isn't quite pricey. My familiarity with Edinburgh venues is poor, The Roxy is the only one I've been in all year.
Beerjacket was 6th in best solo incidentally, understandable he won't pick up so many votes in what has been a quiet year for him. Beyond that I can't control who people vote for, or the AVP gigs would have dominated that category.

  5. Aye, fair point most basement venues have pillars, but the one in Sneaky Pete's is a massive one in a small narrow room. :) They do probably have the best selection of bands on of all the smaller Edinburgh venues apart from Cabaret Voltaire perhaps (which is a basement venue where you can actually see the band, or at least their heads if you are a short arse like me)

  6. Nice work, Jim - I especially like the fact The National keep infiltrating Scottish music polls!

  7. I'm most shocked that people are still voting for King Tut's. In my opinion it's one of the worst venues in Glasgow. That said, I know, I know, I didn't get around to voting. Sorry Jim! Seems I wouldn't have made much difference to the other polls anyway, but nice work.

  8. Damn I really should have voted in this. That said, pretty good lists. Although I have to say I've never been as impressed by The Phantom Band as others have. (Also agree with Jef about Tuts.)
