Chris Bradley - At the Outpost Album Review
Sometimes Aberfedly member Chris Bradley releases his second solo album on Monday. While Aberfeldy tend towards slightly twee, chirpy indie pop on this album Bradley shows much more of a Country tinged Americana influence.
Chris Bradley knows his way around a catchy tune, and his always excellent voice has an effortless quality to it, but the album as a whole is a bit of a mixed bag. For the most part the songs are pleasant enough, but nothing really stands out and grabs my attention, only Not What It Was leaving any real impression on me.
At times the album is a little too laid back for my liking, and also can feel a little cold. Just my personal tastes being different, but I'd have liked a couple of gear changes and feel some of the songs could benefit from being a bit rougher round the edges.
At the Outpost is a perfectly competent album, it's just not one that really strikes a chord with me.

A rare , slightly negative review. Nothing good happening or do you have something against this particular chap?
ReplyDeletePersonally, I can't be bothered with the standard crop of acoustic singer songwriter blandness thats been expoused for the last few years, they;re all annoying and bland.
I saw a bunch of old guts tear it up up the Swan in Paisley today, restored my faith in live music.
Nothing against Mr. Bradley at all, I generally enjoy his stuff and really like Aberfeldy, just couldn't get into this album even after a few plays. I did have second thoughts about posting this one, but figured it was constructive enough that I wasn't slating the labum for fun.
ReplyDeleteI only do negative reviews if I can lay out my reasons for not liking something or be constructive with the criticism. If I just flat out hate something I'll politely pass on writing a review, no matter how tempting it is to rip into something particularly awful now and then.
There's a lot I hear that I don't like, I usually just ignore it, that's why I sometimes get accused of only saying nice things.
